Elders
The Importance of Elders

Elders are highly respected in our communities as knowledge keepers, community supports and teachers. It is important to note, while all seniors are respected as people who may need extra care and attention, Elders (big-E) are gifted special honour for their service to their communities and as knowledge keepers. It is customary to have Elders offer prayers, open and close ceremonies, and provide teachings and knowledge (sometimes they may also be able to share in the Michif language).

Metis Community Services British Columbia (MCSBC) have an Metis Elder Circle where Elders gather to share knowledge and traditions, learn about Metis culture and each other, build community, and enrich the lives of our Elders and families. The Metis Elders Circle meets every second Wednesday from 12:00 to 2:00 at Mamawapowin Early Years Centre at 1580 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna.
